The Amalfi Formichelle
For centuries, along the steep paths and terraced hillsides of the Amalfi Coast, women were the true silent strength of our land.
They were affectionately known as “The Formichelle” (“little ants”), because, like tireless ants, they carried heavy baskets filled with lemons, grapes, firewood, and farm produce on their shoulders. Day after day, they climbed and descended hundreds of steps between the mountains and the sea, connecting the terraced fields to the coastal villages.
Their work was hard, often unseen, yet essential to the local economy and to the lives of Amalfi’s families. With courage, dignity, and determination, they faced routes that today would seem almost impossible, turning everyday hardship into an extraordinary example of strength and resilience.
This illustration pays tribute to those remarkable women, symbols of sacrifice, independence, and love for their homeland.
Long before the expression “women’s empowerment” existed, the Amalfi Formichelle were already living its spirit.
