The Amalfi Formichelle

For centuries, along the steep paths and terraced hillsides of the Amalfi Coast, women were a quiet and essential strength of this land.

They were affectionately known as the Formichelle, or little ants, because they tirelessly carried baskets of lemons, grapes, firewood and farm produce on their shoulders, climbing hundreds of steps every day between mountain and sea.

Their work was hard and often unseen, but essential to family life and the local economy. This illustration pays tribute to their dignity, determination and deep bond with the Amalfi landscape.
