Parva Domus Amalfitana… magna quies

My Amalfi, through memory and colour.

This design began more than twenty-five years ago with a phrase written on a small tile outside the home of Uncle Barone and Aunt Rosa in Via Ercolano Marini, Amalfi:

Parva domus, magna quies.
A small house, great peace.

Those few words stayed with me and I tried to turn them into images. I did not want to portray Amalfi exactly as it is, but my Amalfi: the one made of memories, colours and symbols that have accompanied my life. The Cathedral, hillside houses, stairways, sea, boats and winged horse come together without following perspective or proportion, just as they do in memory.

Amalfi is colour, voices and movement, but it also holds a quieter soul of small houses, lanes and silence. Outside, the world. Inside, peace.

Today I have added one word to that phrase: Amalfitana. Because over time that little house became something more: a feeling of belonging.

Before becoming a print, it is a piece of my story. My Amalfi.
